As they move through the canopy, these intelligent apes instinctively remove dead or unstable branches to prevent falls—essentially pruning the treetops. Each evening, orangutans build new nests in the trees where they sleep. This daily construction not only reflects their cognitive abilities, but also has ecological benefits. The process of bending and breaking branches to build nests opens up gaps in the canopy, allowing sunlight to reach the forest floor. This light penetration fosters undergrowth and encourages biodiversity, strengthening the forest's ability to sequester carbon and buffer against climate disruptions.
